Tenba Ridge Winery inspires gracious living in scenic Trempealeau county, Wisconsin. When John Patrick Gill retired, he left the frenzied life of an executive in Milwaukee for a more peaceful and congenial life.
Winemaking is in John’s blood. His great-grandfather was a winemaker in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France. In times gone by, the Alsatians added other fruit to their grape must (which is what the crushed grapes and juice are called). They typically added apple juice because it was not only convenient, but as a matter of frugality too. At Tenba Ridge John crafts each wine with a local fruit. Sometimes it is apples from Galesville, another time it could be Door County cherries, or cranberries from Black River Falls. The apple juice is added because it imparts smoothness and a unique essence to the wine.
The wines from Tenba Ridge are what John likes to call “porch wines.” “They are casual and meant to be enjoyed….The Wisconsin palate is different…we like sweeter wines.”
When the road beckons, take a drive out to Tenba Ridge and add to your level of gracious living.
